Today, our featured performer is Elena Hollenhorst. Elena is back and performing her own contemporary work titled "Three Fates" for MDF this year.

"Three Fates examines the liminal space between free will, the impact of decisions, and fate. Emerging out of Hollenhorst’s fascination with two contradictory ideas existing in one place, this work borrows its title from Greek Mythology's weavers of destiny, the Three Fates or the Moirai. Embedded in an isolated environment, the movement ranges from minimal to dynamic and invites the viewer into a dreamlike atmosphere."

Don't miss a chance to see her and all of the talented performers!

Anniston Doleys is a company member with Ballet Mi Anniston Doleys is a company member with Ballet Minnesota and has been diligently rehearsing as the Principal role in the classical ballet "Paquita." We asked a few questions to see how she prepares.

✨How many Minnesota Dance Festivals have you participated in?
➡️"I have participated in five MDF's throughout my ballet career with Classical Ballet Academy/Ballet Minnesota. I have performed roles in Sorcerer's Apprentice, Sleeping Beauty, At the Museum, La Bayadere, Les Slyphides, and contemporary works choreographed by Artistic Director, Andrew Rist. These annual festivals allow me to develop my technique, improve my strength, and broaden my experiences. These are a big part of how I have grown as as ballerina and have led me to be the dancer I am today."

✨How do you prepare for principal roles? What are the most challenging parts of these particular roles?
➡️"Oftentimes, I prepare by myself envisioning the choreography with the applied corrections and listening to the music in my spare time. I try to embrace the emotion and physicality that's throughout the piece and talk myself through the things I need to do well in order to have success. As I've rehearsed with Regisseur, Cheryl Rist, for numerous MDFs, I've learned to prepare myself to the intense rehearsing and detailed-oriented movements. Struggling is the part that I dread the most, but where I know the most improvements are happening in my dancing. The challenging part, for me, is figuring out how to maintain perseverance and stray away from getting overwhelmed. Always rehearsing alone, I have to keep myself accountable and strictly correct myself to live up to the high expectations all lead roles demand."

✨Do you have any advice for younger students?
➡️The best advice I could give to younger dancers is to dance for yourself and force yourself to be uncomfortable sometimes. Discomfort is when one has the opportunity to grow, when strength can be gained and technique improved. When you allow yourself to be vulnerable to feeling the movement and be open to mistakes, the audience will then be part of your performance."

It's not too late to get your tickets today! 🎟️

Juliana Johnson is our featured performer of the d Juliana Johnson is our featured performer of the day! Juliana is another returning guest to MDF and will be performing a contemporary piece titled “Home” Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 2pm.

Juliana share her rehearsal process & a fun memory of past MDFs below:

Choreography Process: “First, I come up with a theme & concept; I do research and brainstorm to come up with ideas, focal points, and & an energetic or emotional arc for the piece. This is where I began working with the musicians to create the music for the work. Next, I get into the studio to create and explore movement inspired by those concepts and content. From there, I set, sculpt, and build the choreography and compositional map of the work with the music.”

Memory: “I remember performing in MDF for many years back when I was a student while it was still at the Fitzgerald Theater. One of my favorite ballet roles to perform was a broom in Andy’s “Sorcerer’s Apprentice.” I began performing my own choreography as a professional dancer in the festival starting in 2018. It’s been a very full circle experience for myself as a dancer & artist.”

“Hi! My name is Kendall Kramer, I'm a Minneapolis-based dancer and choreographer. I'm so grateful to share my contemporary solo, "Volume," at the Minnesota Dance Festival. Volume reflects my curiosity about literature as a way to generate dance; myths about the feminine ghost inspire my work. The title Volume encompasses both the eternal nature of a spirit, and the physical ways in which we tell its story. Most challenging for me in my process is expressing the non-linear element of a ghost story - she’s here, she’s not, she’s everywhere, she’s a memory. How does she reveal herself, or become revealed? To create dimensionality, I am exploring the use of layered text and costume elements, in addition to playing with the desires of disparate body parts through movement. I hope you’ll come to catch Volume at The Minnesota Dance Festival!”

You can see "Volume" performed by Kendall Kramer on Saturday, May 13th at 2 or 7pm!
